The year was 1945.
Joe was involved in a skirmish with German troops in Normandy and, while pulling his wounded friend to safety, was shot in the head. He had just been promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, though he never knew.
It was four years before his body was returned to his home in East Tennessee.
His sacrifice inspired his youngest brother, born in the year of 1946, to join the National Guard.
Our Grandfather and the tale of our Great-Uncle Joe, as well as those of others in our family, has had a large part in encouraging a deep sense of gratitude and respect for our Veterans; we would like to share this video with you and ask you to give your deepest thanks to those who have fought for our freedom.
Thank you, and God bless.
